Another week, another seismic shift in the AI landscape. This week: a major model drop from OpenAI, an embarrassing stumble from Meta, a surprise enterprise collab between Microsoft and Anthropic, China going full throttle on AI agents, and Nvidia GTC looming like a tech supernova. Let's break it all down.

1. OpenAI Drops GPT-5.4, The Enterprise Killshot

On March 5th, OpenAI released GPT-5.4, and this one is different. It's a consolidation play: coding from GPT-5.3-Codex, advanced reasoning, and native computer-use capabilities all in one model. It can autonomously navigate desktops, browsers, and software without custom infrastructure.

The headline feature: ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets, now in beta. Drop it into a spreadsheet and it builds, analyzes, and updates financial models on its own. Paired with integrations for FactSet, Moody's, MSCI, and Third Bridge, this is OpenAI going directly after the enterprise finance market, a space Anthropic has owned since Claude for Financial Services launched in mid-2025.

GPT-5.4 is also 33% less likely to hallucinate individual claims compared to GPT-5.2. For enterprise use, that's the number that actually matters. Available now on ChatGPT Plus, Team, Pro, and API.

💡 Our Take: OpenAI just merged four models into one and pointed it directly at Anthropic's cash cow. The AI arms race just got a lot more expensive for everyone involved.

2. Meta's "Avocado" Model Delayed, Can't Keep Up With Google or OpenAI

Meta's next frontier model, codenamed "Avocado," was scheduled for this month. It's now pushed to May at the earliest, possibly later, after internal tests showed it falling short of Gemini and GPT-5.4 on key benchmarks.

The kicker: Meta is reportedly exploring licensing Google's Gemini as a stopgap. For a company that built its AI identity around open-source independence, that would be a remarkable reversal. The irony is that Meta's open-source strategy (Llama) actually helped competitors move faster by giving everyone a solid foundation to iterate from.

💡 Our Take: The frontier model race is brutally unforgiving. Even Meta with its billions can't buy its way to the top anymore.

3. Microsoft + Anthropic Launch "Copilot Cowork", AI Agents Inside M365

On March 9th, Microsoft announced Copilot Cowork, an enterprise AI agent built with Anthropic, powered by Claude. It lives inside Microsoft 365 and autonomously creates spreadsheets, runs reports, manages emails, and coordinates multi-step workflows across the entire suite.

The key advantage over standalone Claude: deep access to M365's internal infrastructure, org data, and permissions. Microsoft gets Claude's reasoning. Anthropic gets distribution to hundreds of millions of Office users. Every legacy workflow SaaS charging $50/seat just got a very serious problem.

💡 Our Take: These agents don't just compete with productivity SaaS, they make entire categories irrelevant.

4. China Goes All-In on AI Agents With OpenClaw

OpenClaw, the agentic AI system making waves globally, has found its most enthusiastic market in China. Chinese usage has already surpassed the US. Tencent built QClaw, a WeChat/QQ launcher for the agent, and major firms are racing to deploy at scale with full government support.

While the US debates guardrails, China is running a national-scale live experiment at full speed. What happens there over the next 6 months will define how the rest of the world deploys AI agents.

💡 Our Take: The agent era isn't coming, it's here. China is running the largest live AI experiment in history.

5. Nvidia GTC 2026, The Real March Madness

Nvidia's GPU Technology Conference runs March 11,20 in San Jose. CEO Jensen Huang's keynote is the most anticipated AI hardware event of the year. Nvidia is signaling ambitions across the full AI stack: chips, infrastructure, software, and agents. Fortune summed it up perfectly: "Forget basketball. Nvidia GTC is the real March Madness."

Full keynote coverage in next week's digest.

💡 Our Take: The AI software layer is getting commoditized fast. The infrastructure layer, Nvidia's domain, just becomes more valuable every single week.

The Stat That Defines This Week

267 AI models released in Q1 2026 alone. Nearly 3 per day. The pace isn't slowing, it's accelerating. For indie builders, every new model is a new capability to build on top of. The window to create something meaningful has never been wider.

That's the week in AI. Agents are taking over, the big labs are in a knife fight for enterprise, and Nvidia is about to remind everyone who actually powers this whole thing. See you next Saturday. ⚡
